 Groovy
Games
Brought to you by
Groovy Games consists of 5 different challenges:
·
Righteous Retriever
– a simple game of toss & fetch with bonus points for a full retrieve.
Teams are allowed 3 attempts to score as many points as possible. The
handler
must be behind the throwing line for all throws, but may move freely
around the
field at other times. A throw will not be scored if the handler steps on
or over the
throwing line during the release of the toy.
Scoring is based on the following point scale:
·
1-Point if the thrown toy lands between the lines (15-20 yards)
·
2-Points if the dog catches the toy before it comes to a complete stop
·
3-Points if the dog is in mid-air when the toy is caught
·
4-Points if the dog returns the toy back to the throwing line.
·
5-Points if the dog returns and releases the toy into your hand.
·
Hoola-Hoop Shoot
– a simple game of
toss & catch with bonus points for throws through the hoop.
Teams are allowed 3 attempts to score as many points as possible. The
handler must be behind the throwing line for all throws, but may move
freely
around the field at other times. A throw will not be scored if the
handler steps
on or over the throwing line during the release of the toy.
A toy thrown through the “HOOP” triples the score of each catch, and is
still worth
3 points even if the toy is not caught. If a canine catches a toy with
paws in more
than one scoring zone, the catch will be scored as if it were made in
the scoring
zone closest to the throwing line.
Scoring is based on the following point scale:
·
1-Point Zone (Less then 5 yards)
·
2-Point Zone (Beyond 5 yard line)
·
3-Point Zone (Beyond 10 yard line)
·
5-Point Zone (Beyond 15 yard line)
·
Turned-On Trickster
– a simple game
where teams earn points by performing tricks with or without toys.
Teams are allowed 60 seconds and one toy to score as many points as
possible.
A countdown of time remaining will be uniform for all competitors: 30
seconds, 10
seconds and time. The handler and canine are required to be inside the
playing
zone before time starts. When the handler is ready, the judge (timer)
will say GO
and start the clock.
Scoring is based on the following point scale:
· 3
points for
each different DOG TRICK or maneuvering skill performed in the
allotted time. To be scored, the handler must issue a verbal command and
the canine must complete that trick. The handler may give hand signals,
but
cannot physically guide, assist, or force the dog into performing the
maneuver. The same trick performed repeatedly is only scored the first
time.
· 1
point for
every CATCH AND RELEASE of a toy by the dog. To be scored,
the handler must release the toy in the air before the canine touches it
(the
dog cannot take the toy from the handlers hand) AND the dog must release
the toy before the handler picks it up (the handler cannot take the toy
from
the dog’s mouth).
·
Disc Doggie Dartboard
– an intermediate game where teams earn points by catching discs in
target zones.
Teams are allowed 60 seconds and one disc to score as many points as
possible.
A countdown of time remaining will be uniform for all teams: 30 seconds,
10
seconds (5, 4, 3, 2, 1, if necessary) and time.
The handler and canine are required to be behind the throwing line
before time
starts. When the handler is ready, the line judge (timer) will give them
the OK to
start. Time begins when the dog crosses the starting line.
The handler must be behind the throwing line (20-yards from center) for
all
throws, but may move freely around the field at other times. A throw
will not be
scored if the handler steps on or over the throwing line prior to or
during the
release of the disc. If the disc leaves the handler's hand before time
is called, it
will be scored.
To receive points, catches must be completed with any paw landing within
one of
the official scoring zones (see diagram). If a canine catches a disc
with paws in
more than one scoring zone, the catch will be scored as if it were made
in the
higher scoring zone.
Scoring is based on the following point scale.
An
additional one-point bonus will
be awarded for each successful catch in which the dog makes a catch with
all four
paws clearly off the ground in an obvious jumping effort:
·
1-Point Zone
(Over 8 yards from center)
·
2-Point Zone
(6 to 8 yards from center)
·
3-Point Zone
(4 to 6 yards from center)
·
4-point Zone
(2 to 4 yards from center)
·
5-Point Zone
(Under 2 yards from center)
·
Freak-Out Freestyle
– an
advanced game where competitors choreograph disc & dog tricks to music.
Freestyle teams are allowed up to three minutes and five discs to
complete as
many tricks and catches as possible in a routine that is choreographed
to music.
Winners will be
selected using
Appalachian
Idol
audience participation voting!
